Drummer/composer Ches Smith started his solo project Congs for Brums in 2005 to attempt a unified music for the vibraphone and the drum set. He soon incorporated keyboard and drum machine, enmeshing their sonics with the tones of the drums and the metals of the vibes and cymbals.
